Weekends away

What about weekends?

Group weekends are a regular feature of our programme. In the summer we usually go camping, although there will be a youth hostel weekend, and possibly bunkhouse options too. In autumn and winter we generally stay in youth hostels, or similar types of accommodation.

What do we do on weekends?

The main focus is hill-walking, but in summer there is a cycling weekend, and at least one weekend near a beach. Some group members also do other outdoor activities such as climbing or canoeing.

Evenings provide the opportunity for informal socialising, drinking and meals out. Barbecues are often a feature of summer camping!

Aren’t hostels rather basic?

The old rules about doing a hostel job, not using a car to get to the hostel, and no alcohol have been relaxed in recent years. Bedding is provided, but remember to bring your towel and toothbrush! Youth hostels provide bunk-bed dormitory accommodation often ranging between 4 and 8 beds to a dormitory.

Most hostels offer breakfast and evening meal options, and there are members kitchens to prepare your own meals if you prefer. There is often a good pub nearby.

How do I book ?

If you want to come on a weekend you must :

  • Contact the weekend leader by the ‘book by’ date on the programme (earlier if possible) to reserve your place.
  • Pay the leader in advance for bed-nights at youth hostels - usually at least 5 weeks before the actual weekend.
  • Note that some camp-sites also require advance payment
